The Natual Face Lift

I often discuss age-related conditions that affect our bodies as we grow older. Today, I would like to talk to you about another consequence of aging: sagging facial skin. Although wrinkling, drooping and sagging do not have any physiological consequences, appearance makes a great impact on how we feel about ourselves and the image we project to the world. Many of my patients ask what they can do to combat skin aging, but few are ready to undergo major surgery. If a traditional face lift sounds too drastic, there are other steps you can take to tone, tighten and stay as young looking as possible.

The Natural Face Lift

Even avid gym goers probably don't consider giving the facial muscles a good workout. So-called "face lift exercises," however, can help you keep and regain a younger-looking appearance. Although they do not do any heavy lifting, the muscles in our face still work hard. They form every expression from smiles to frowns, and they give structure to the skin.

As we age, our bodies lose muscle. We can reverse this effect by consistently lifting weights to stay strong. The same principle applies to facial muscles. Here are some exercises you can do to tone them and prevent sagging skin. Do them in order and repeat 3 to 6 times.

1) Pucker your lips. Close your eyes and continue to push your lips out as far as you can. Hold for 20 seconds.

2) Open your eyes wide, raise your eyebrows and open your mouth, as if you are surprised. Hold this pose for 20 seconds while focusing on moving the facial muscles away from your mouth.

3) Put your palm on your forehead and tilt your head back like you are looking at the ceiling. Try to raise your head back up while pushing down with your palm to strengthen the neck muscles.

Facial Massage

Although it is now performed by therapists of virtually every background, much of the technique of facial massage was developed in India. Trained practitioners manipulate the facial muscles in a regimented series of movements. The goal is to release tension and loosen the connective tissue so the muscles have more room to relax. When this is accomplished, circulation increases and tissue can move freely over muscle and bone.

The theory behind facial massage centers around freeing the facial muscles. As tension builds over the course of a lifetime, they can become locked in certain habitual expressions and postures. Performing the same movements over and over limits the range of motion in the face. This makes it more difficult to relax and encourages wrinkle formation. With massage and energy balancing techniques, practitioners can help relax the face and restore some of your youthful vitality.

Face-Firming Masks

Many natural ingredients have the ability to firm the skin and constrict blood vessels which can result in a tightened, "lifted" appearance. Although temporary, masks can give you a boost of confidence before an important event. Here's one easy version to try at home: mix the juice of one lemon, one egg white, four tablespoons of powdered milk, and 1 tablespoon of witch hazel. Apply to your face and neck and relax for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and wash your face as usual.

Whatever method you prefer, natural face lifts are easy, affordable options. If you are tired of seeing sagging skin in the mirror, try one of these techniques. You might like the results, and you won't need to turn to painful, expensive surgical procedures.
